Board Highlights

Improving Personal Support Worker (PSW) Capacity across Waterloo Wellington

The WWLHIN continues to work to address PSW capacity challenges across Waterloo Wellington. As part of a multi-faceted approach, the WWLHIN will be conducting a review of local PSW services and working with local PSW service providers to identify and implement solutions.

Local service providers include: Paramed, CarePartners, Closing the Gap, CBI, and Bayshore.  

WWLHIN Board Endorses Expansion of Guelph General Hospital Emergency Department

The growing and aging population in Guelph has resulted in increasing numbers of residents accessing the Emergency Department at the Guelph General Hospital. The Waterloo Wellington LHIN Board endorsed a plan to expand the emergency department to better serve local residents. The expansion plan will ensure Guelph General Hospital is able to meet the projected growth for Guelph and Wellington. It will also ensure patient wait times continue to meet provincial targets.

The plan will now be reviewed by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, as part of the five-stage capital planning process. It includes a proposal to relocate patients who require an extended assessment for mental health and addictions to another section of the hospital, creating more room to accommodate a higher volume in the emergency area.

WWLHIN Board Endorses Plan for Renal Dialysis Services at Cambridge Memorial Hospital

Due to an increase in patients needing long-term renal dialysis, more than 550 people in the Cambridge area travel three times a week to Kitchener for treatment. To better support Cambridge residents, the WWLHIN Board endorsed the establishment of chronic kidney disease services at Cambridge Memorial Hospital to meet the growing demand for dialysis and to provide patients with services closer to home.

The plan for renal dialysis services includes the renovation of the ambulatory outpatient space at the hospital. The plan will now be reviewed by the Ministry, as part of the five-stage capital planning process.

Digital Health Update

Digital health is making it easier for patients to access services, as well as improving the quality of the care they receive.

The Waterloo Wellington LHIN’s Chief Clinical Information Officer Dr. Mohamed Alarakhia provided an update to the Board on progress to advance digital health tools for local residents.

One initiative, the Quality Based Improvement in Care Project, is providing digital support to clinicians to improve patient care. In addition to supporting clinicians with electronic medical record management, this project has helped to increase access to specialty care through use of eConsult and telemedicine. The project is also working towards chronic disease prevention so patients can avoid unnecessary hospital stays.

Board & Governance

The WWLHIN is governed by a Board of up to nine directors who are selected by the Lieutenant Governor in Council and appointed through Order in Council. The Board is bound by agreements with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, is responsible for the management and control of the affairs of the WWLHIN, and is the key point of interaction with the Ministry.

Joan Fisk has held leadership positions within the business community, including President and CEO, Tiger Brand Knitting Company Ltd, and most recently serving as President and CEO of the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce from 2008 - 2010.

Jeff Nesbitt - Vice Chair

Jeff Nesbitt is the Vice President for the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation (CMHF) working with a national team to help men and their families live healthier lives.

Michael Delisle

Michael Delisle is the president and CEO of The Registrar Company Inc. and has also held the same position at consulting firm McCormick Delisle and Thompson Inc. as well as executive positions at KPMG, General Electric and ABB.

Bryan Larkin

Bryan Larkin

Bryan Larkin is the Chief of Waterloo Regional Police Services and is responsible for providing executive leadership to Waterloo Regional Police Service and facilitates the administrative and operational delivery of policing services to Waterloo Region while fostering relationships with community stakeholders, partners and all citizens.

Murray O'Brien

Murray O’Brien

Murray O’Brien is a Certified Human Resources Professional. He retired from Schneider Foods in Kitchener after 28 years of service where he held senior leadership positions in human resources.

Jan Varner

Jan Varner, a well-known community leader with more than 30 years of governance experience, is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the United Way Kitchener Waterloo & Area.
