St. Mary’s Respirologist Recognized for Medical Excellence

November 4, 2014 (KITCHENER, ON) – Dr. Mary Jackson, a respirologist at St. Mary’s General Hospital who is known for her commitment to compassionate patient care, has been chosen by the hospital to receive the 2014 Lackner Award for Medical Excellence.

Dr. Jackson was nominated by staff in the Emergency Department and on the Chest Unit who say she treats all patients and staff with respect and is gentle but forthright when delivering a diagnosis. She has practised at St. Mary’s since 1987 and was a key player in the voluntary transfer of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic from Grand River Hospital to St. Mary’s in 2011. She continues as director of the clinic and is a strong advocate for her patients, including the vulnerable Cystic Fibrosis group.

Dr. Jackson also contributes to educating medial students as Regional Education Lead for Internal Medicine at McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine – Waterloo Regional Campus.

She will be presented with the award during St. Mary’s Annual Community Update, which takes place November 13 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in Heasley Hall at St. Mary’s. This year’s event will focus on the 10th anniversary of the Thoracic and Respiratory programs at St. Mary’s.

"Dr. Jackson follows the Mission of St. Mary’s and the values of the St. Joseph’s Health System by treating not just the patient’s illness, but the family unit as a whole,” says Christine Henhoeffer, Chair of the St. Mary’s Board of Trustees. “She exhibits a high standard of morals and ethics on a daily basis.”

“For the compassion, commitment and clinical expertise that Dr. Jackson provides to patients and health care team members, she is most deserving of the Lackner award,” adds St. Mary’s President Don Shilton.

The Lackner Award is presented annually to a physician who demonstrates excellence in patient care, innovation, compassion, and a commitment to the mission and values of St. Mary’s General Hospital and the St. Joseph’s Health System. The award was established to honour 80 years of service to St. Mary’s by Dr. Harry Lackner, his son Dr. Allister Lackner and grandson Dr. John Lackner.
